Winterizing Elevator Systems

Elevators in buildings require special maintenance to deal with snow, water, and condensate in the winter. While snow and water tracked into building entryways and onto elevators are very visible problems that can be addressed with floor mats, it is condensation within the shaft that can cause operational problems. During winter, cold outside air can infiltrate warmer elevator shafts causing immediate and long-term damage to the system.

Don't Fry Frozen

Anyone who has ever deep fried a turkey knows the bird must be lowered very slowly into the oil. Moisture on the surface will start to boil immediately and can cause burns. What happens with a frozen turkey? If it’s still frozen, the ice becomes water and expands rapidly to steam. The boiling is so intense, oil, which is lighter than water, will spatter onto the hot surface of the burner, then ignited by the flame. This is a serious hazard to both persons and property as the fire can spread quickly.

Casting Refractory Material in Cold Weather

In Ohio as with many areas of the country, we’re used to seeing orange barrels on the highway marking the coming of summer only to see the numbers decrease during mid-fall. They’re as predictable as spring flowers and fall harvest. In cold weather, less and less concrete is poured because the recommended temperature for pouring is 50°F and 70°F. Below that temperature, the chemical reaction related for curing is very slow or non-existent. Above those temperatures, reactions may be too fast causing weaknesses in the material as well.

Get Warm from the Inside Out

As temperatures lower, fluids may become less viscous, making them harder to pump or pour. Oils used for heating may need to be warmed so they are easier to handle. Other fluids may freeze, not only preventing flow but damaging pipes, storage containers and flow control equipment. This can result in damage to other equipment, lost production time and higher maintenance costs.

BriskHeat Solutions in Natural Gas Processing

A decrease reliance of coal burning power plants has resulted in electrical power generation becoming the fastest growing use of natural gas. In addition to heating and power cogeneration, natural gas can be used for hydrogen production as part of steam methane reformation. While consumption of natural gas increases, pressure from the United Nations Environmental Program is calling on all countries to decrease green-house gases and increase their use of renewable energy sources. This is where BriskHeat can help.
