Oil and gas are major fuel sources for generating heat and electricity. To keep these fuels flowing in cold weather, they require heat themselves. Lower temperatures cause high viscosity in liquids, reducing the oils’ ability to flow. Fuel gases can condense in pipelines and eventually freeze. When these conditions occur, the results can be devastating to individuals and industry.
Since oil fumes and fuel gases can be combustible, special consideration is given to the devices used to heat fuels. Heating equipment may need to meet specific hazardous area classifications. The classification is based on environmental hazards as well as the likelihood of flammable fumes to be present.
In general, a hazardous environment requires that any equipment capable of producing an arc or spark needs to be sealed to prevent flammable materials from infiltrating the equipment.
Hazardous Area Heat Trace
Self-regulating heating cable or heat trace, is available for ordinary locations, or to meet specific hazardous area classifications. While the cable itself has agency approvals, it must be the combination of the cable along with the accessories that should be considered.
For example, BriskHeat’s SLCBL cable is approved by CSA for Class I Division 2 (CID2) hazardous locations. For the complete system to meet CSA CID2, the cable must be installed with compatible CID2 power connections, terminations, splices, and tees. Low profile tee, splice and end terminations kits are available as well as a multiple entry connection box.
Key Considerations to Remember: System Compatibility. Ensure all components (cable, connections, terminations) meet the required hazardous area classification.

Hazardous Area Container Heaters and Blankets
Flammable liquids are often stored in 30 or 55-gallon drums. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) list material properties which include flammability information such as auto-ignition temperature. BriskHeat’s DHCX container heaters can be ordered with or without an explosion-resistant temperature controller including bulb & capillary sensor. Heaters are 8” (203 mm) wide and utilize 2 springs for closure. BriskHeat can make custom widths and lengths to fit custom size containers. All heaters include a high limit thermostat with T-ratings of T3 (292°F/144°C) or T4A (158°F/70°C). These are located on the back side of the conduit fitting where the power leads exit the heater. These heaters are FM approved for Class I Division 2 hazardous areas.
BriskHeat also offers the SRX hazardous area heating blanket, similar in design to the DHCX drum heaters. These include the same high limit thermostats as the DHCX container heaters; however, the temperature controller must be ordered separately. There are standard sizes from 6” x 12” to 24” x 24” with a power density of 2.5 watts/in2.
