Heat Keeps You Cool
Compressors are a main component in most HVAC systems and are housed in the crankcase. Compressors are used in air conditioners and heat pumps to circulate refrigerant through the system. The refrigerant removes heat from the air, essentially making the room cooler. Compressors contain oil which is needed to lubricate the system. When the air conditioner or heat pump is operating, the system generates enough heat to keep the compressor warm. However, when the system is shut off, refrigerant allows the compressor to get cold.
Why is this a problem?
When cold, not only does the oil viscosity increase but the refrigerant can be drawn into the section of the compressor where the oil is stored. This dilutes the oil and impacts the operation of the compressor. BriskHeat stocks a variety of crankcase heaters in different voltages with adjustable diameters. These heaters help keep the compressor housing warm when the system is not running. This prevents migration of the refrigerant and allows you to keep cool.
Drying the Drips
We mentioned refrigerant removes heat from the air, but keep in mind, the warm air usually contains water vapor. As the air cools, condensation can form on the outside of components. The refrigerant can be so cold that the condensate freezes. This is why heat pumps and air conditioners have a built-in defrost cycle. Without it, the system would freeze completely and fail to operate. During the defrost cycle, the condensate drips from the components and must be removed. When possible, drip pans collect it and funnel it to a drain line.
What if there is no drain line?

There are two styles, a standard tubular pan with a float to activate the heater as the pans fill. The newer, PTC style operates at a lower wattage and temperature that is suitable for use with low flash-point liquids. These are used when the condensate might contain refrigerant. Evapoway pans eliminate the need for drain lines.
Protect Motors and Compressors
Did you know that starting a motor requires more amps than when the motor is running at maximum power? The same is true for a lot of electrical appliances and means backup power generators and solar power systems need to be larger, just to provide the required amps for startup. This is known as inrush current. The extra current translates into additional torque that can cause mechanical shock, excessive heat and damage to the equipment being started.
SureStart Soft Starters reduce the torque requirement by gradually adjusting the amp draw during startup. A reduction of up to 70% is possible.
