Description

BriskHeat Mid-Temperature Self-Regulating Heating Cable is an ideal solution for freeze protection and low temperature process maintenance up to 250°F (121°C); Suitable for extreme cold conditions as low as -22°F (-30°C). This heating cable automatically adjusts heat output based on surface temperature. Choose between two different outer layers for dry and wet or weak environments. No temperature controller is required.

Note: Special consideration must be given for the circuit breaker due to the high initial in-rush currents

How Self-Regulating Cable Works

  • The semi-conductive core material contains a graphite network, which allows electricity to flow from one bus wire to the other. When the core is dense and colder, there are many paths for electricity to take through the graphite network, producing more heat.
  • Since the core material expands as it heats, the graphite network is elongated, disrupting some of the paths. More and more paths are disrupted as heating continues until the system reaches self-controlled thermal stability. When the core material cools, it contracts, reconnecting some of the electrical paths in the graphite network, and more equivalent heat is produced.
  • This temperature response occurs independently at each point along the heater. If an externally produced high temperature occurs next to a low temperature in the cable, each section of heating cable will adjust its own heat output in relation to its own local requirements.

What is self-regulating cable?

Self-regulating cable, also known as heat tape or heat trace, is a semi-flexible heating cable that automatically regulates its heat output based upon surface temperature and ambient conditions. It is often used for freeze protection applications to wrap or trace pipes, tanks, vessels, roofing, and much more.

What is a Class I/Division 1 environment?

Class I/Division 1 is an environment in which ignitable concentrations of flammable gases or vapors may exist under normal operating conditions, uring repair and maintenance, or where faulty equipment might release these flammable gasses or vapors.

Where do I find Class I /Division 1 environments?

Common industries include Oil, Hydrocarbon & Gas Exploration and Refining, Chemical Manufacturing/Processing, Paint Production, Mining, Coal Processing, and many more.

How much heat does selfregulating cable generate?

Depending upon model and wattage, heat output can vary greatly. Maximum operating temperatures range from 150°F to 392°F (65°C to 120°C), but because of the selfregulating design, actual temperatures are normally much lower.

What is the maximum allowable circuit length?

Depending on wattage, voltage, and circuit capacity, circuit lengths can range from 32 ft to 660 ft.

How do I select the best heating cable for my application?

BriskHeat provides, at no charge, a full-service heat-loss calculation and engineering support to make a recommendation based on the specifications of your application.

Do I need to insulate over the cable?

Yes, insulation is always recommended to maximize thermal performance and efficiency.

What insulation should I use with Self-Regulating heating cable?

Depending on the application, BriskHeat offers two types of insulation; Insul-Lock pre-formed foam insulation for pipe, and Silver-Series cloth insulators for pipe, valves, flanges, etc., as well as custom designed insulators. Contact BriskHeat to determine which best fits your requirements.
