 A “hard starter” reduces system start-up time by spiking the in-rush current. It’s used when the electrical current may need a boost to get the A/C system operating. It increases in-rush to the compressor and doesn’t provide any protective benefits.

Soft starter

A “soft starter” increases the efficiency and longevity of HVAC units and heat pumps. It reduces the in-rush current needed for compressors to start by 60%, thus minimizing potential damage to compressors from mechanical shock hard-starting current surges.  Additionally, it reduces the required size of a generator needed to start the system by 60%.

Which type of starter is best for you?

Pros and Cons of Hard Starters:

Hard starter kits (a combination potential relay and start capacitor) are preferred in applications in which the system design requires high starting torque, or in small-sized applications (less than 1.5kW), in which reciprocating and rotary compressors must start against a pressure head and may require a device to increase the starting torque. Note that if the HVAC unit utilizes a scroll compressor, hard start kits aren’t generally needed.

Hard starters typically cost less than soft starters. However, the forcefulness of a hard start can cause compressor parts to deteriorate faster. Another con is the noise factor.

Because of their simplicity, hard starters work best when all operating conditions are “normal.” If or when something does go wrong, they can fail – AND damage the compressor winding, as well.

Pros and Cons of Soft Starters:

An electronic soft starter is designed to reduce the starting current of the compressor by actively controlling the current in both the run and start windings. Soft starters also offer built-in features to protect the compressor under atypical circumstances.

Soft starters are particularly well suited for off-grid generator or inverter-based HVAC applications where the limited capacity of source rating and cable impedances over vast distances can imply that the compressor won’t start.

While soft starters cost more, they’re quieter and last longer, and the return on investment is realized several times over through generator savings and increased compressor life.

Introducing BriskHeat’s Newest Soft Starter – Surestart:

BriskHeat’s Surestart compressor soft starter protects A/C compressors from failures including stalling, overheating, motor reversal and arcing damage. Developed for use with single-phase scroll type compressors, the starters are available for all standard size compressors up to 32A and voltages up to 230VAC.

BriskHeat now offers New ATEX-Certified Container Heaters. These heaters are ideal for a wide range of hazardous-area gas and dust environment heating applications. Fully insulated and water resistant, these heaters are also suitable for use in outdoor or wet environments as ATEX containers are IP 65 rated. Additionally, they can be sufficient in some locations in place of Class 1 Division 2 Hazardous ratings. Must be accompanied by the ATEX-rated controller.

ATEX Line Card

The heaters are designed to protect the contents of bulk containers such as drums, IBC tanks and gas bottles from damage due to cold temperatures and can be safely used in hazardous areas. They can also be used for warming.

Industries such as petrochemical, oil and gas, cosmetics, fertilizers, pharmaceutical, and specialty gasses often need to store and dispense many types of liquids and gasses within designated hazardous areas. They’re rated IP65/I and acceptable for indoor or outdoor use. Common containers include 200-220 litre/55-gallon drums, 1000 litre/250-gallon IBC tanks, and 10, 50, and 79-litre gas bottles.

“If a heater isn’t used to protect or heat the contents of a container the increase of production time and cost or damage to equipment could be very costly and cause serious downtime,” said Klaus Kolleck, Vice President of European Sales, BriskHeat. “For facility maintenance managers, process engineers and production managers who routinely deal with these containers in hazardous areas, BriskHeat’s new ATEX-certified heaters are the solution they need.”

Additionally, BriskHeat offers an ATEX-certified temperature controller/high-limit combination unit for use with all ATEX heaters.  It features an operating temperature control, high-limit temperature limiter, a power limiting control, a clear window to easily monitor temperature, 25-amp capacity, and a temperature controlling range up to 450°C.

This presentation will compare the use of a VT Vacuum Curing / Debulking Table with built-in heat and a silicone vacuum membrane, to conventional composite lay-ups using vacuum film, blankets and hot bonder, a platen press or autoclave. The silicone membrane seals more easily, is more durable than film, and its elasticity conforms to complex surfaces without wrinkles. When used in a quick turn-around production setting, the amount of consumable materials is greatly reduced, and backlogs of parts waiting to be loaded into an autoclave is eliminated. Throughput is increased and cost per part reduced over the lifespan of the equipment. Vacuum table use can provide a shorter ROI and more consistent cures than other processes in some applications. Market sectors range from defense and military to ultra-light weight sporting goods. Think of it in terms of boiling water. 

If you turn on your stovetop and heat a pot of water, it eventually comes to a boil once it reaches 212°F (100°C). Once the water boils, you could shut off the heat so it doesn't all steam away or splash out of the pot. The temperature will continue to rise a bit after you shut down the burner. When the water stops boiling and begins to cool, you might then turn it back on and bring it to a boil again. 

That's what an On/Off Controller does to help companies control heat for certain processes. 

However, that higher heat and the subsequent drop to a cooler temperature might not be ideal for some processes. The oscillation of heat might cause damage to ingredients, materials, equipment and so on.

This is where a PID controller comes in handy. PID stands for Proportional, Integral and Derivative. These are the elements that work to maintain the correct temperatures in a process. Proportional is the actual variance in temperatures. Integral is the previous variance from the set temperature. Derivative is the predicted future variance. Basically, it all means that it takes a formula to keep the temperature of the boiling water at 212 degrees. That's what PID Controllers help with. 

So, our example would be that the stovetop burner would be turned on with the pot of water on it. The PID Controller would be set to 212°F. As the temperature gets close to that and the water boils, the contoller would then determine how much current to send to the heating element to prevent the temperature from going over 212°. It would then monitor the temperature to make sure it doesn't drop below 212°. Should the ambient air temperature drop on the kitchen - maybe the air conditioning kicks on - the PID might also have to make an adjustment to keep the water boiling. 

Which one is right for your process? Well, an On/Off Controller is not bad option. The up and down oscillation of heat may not matter to your process. So you would be saving money if constant and consistent temperature is not needed or required. Furnaces, water heaters, even that pesky air conditioner basically uses on and off control. 

PID Control panels are used with medical equipment that needs to be sterilized. The tools need to reach a certain temperature and stay at that temperature for a specific amount of time. That's what's called a single loop setup. A multi-loop setup allows the controller to manage several processes at a time. For example, if you had to operate several ovens at the same time with different temperatures. There are even multi-zone controllers available that have to keep a larger heating element that might have variances in temperature across the entire process.

Our customers have pipes, vessels, and tanks that need to be heated to complete a process in their commercial or industrial settings. So, we sell them our self-regulating heating cable, or the constant-watt cable, or our heating tape which are all very effective at generating anything from a low heat that keeps pipes from freezing to a high temperature heat that's needed to keep a material melted, for example.

The one thing usually missing from their application equation, however is... insulation!

Depending on their circumstances, we always suggest that our customers add insulation to their order. Why? Just like you have insulation in your house to keep your heat in, you can use insulators along with your heating tape and cables to make them thermally efficient.

There are three main types of band heaters: mica, ceramic and mineral-insulated. What's the difference? They are all insulators for the heating element. 

Mica band heaters tend to be used where a lower maximum temperature is required. It's a good insulator for heaters because it's corrosion-resistant and has good dielectric strength. It also resists chemicals and water and can be somewhat elastic and can hold up to some bending. It cannot hold up to higher heat, as we've mentioned. While its max is usually 900°F (480°C), it probably wouldn't last long if it consistently had to stay at or near that temperature. However, the mica band heater is less expensive. They can accomdate a variety of cut-out and hole arrangements and they have a lot of terminal-out arrangements available. 

Ceramic band heaters can handle much more heat. Usually up to 1200-1400°F (650-760°C). The ceramic segments used in these types of heaters make excellent insulators. However, because ceramics tend to be able to conduct heat, they also tend to hold onto the heat, making it a bit difficult to correctly control temperatures.This can cause process problems, particularly in the plastics industry, due to overheating. They tend to cost a bit more than mica band heaters. 

The mineral-insulated heaters are great for high temperature applications, exceeding 2000°F (1094°C) but they usually operate in and around the 1400°F range. They are also considered to have very high watt densities. The typical material used is Magnesium Oxide and it's a compacted mineral that coats the band heater and provides excellent thermal conductivity. 

You've got options when it comes to your band/nozzle heating needs. Depending on your application, you have choices of the type of insulator you'd use. Go with mica, the most commonly used type of insulator in most industries, if you require the lower temperature heat and want to be economical. Ceramic is your best mid-temperature choice. Finally, if you need a constant higher-temperature band heater, you should select the mineral-insulated band heater.

New Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and Factory Mutual (FM) Approvals for Class I, Division 1 Hazardous-Area Environments

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 19, 2018 – BriskHeat, a leading provider of flexible heating, insulating, and temperature control solutions, announced its new approval ratings for BriskHeat self-regulating heating cables. These cables can be used in Class I, Division 1 hazardous-area locations. The heating cable carries approvals from both the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and Factory Mutual (FM).

Class I, Division 1 locations are those in which flammable gases or vapors are or may be present in the air in quantities sufficient to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures. Ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors, liquids, or even dust can exist under normal operating conditions and can be found in many industries, such as oil and gas, chemical, hydrocarbon refining, mining, and coal processing, along with many others.

Electric process heating tools are required to make this happen. As you probably know, these tools come in a variety of shapes, sizes, finish materials, watt densities, wattage, and voltage ratings.  

They include a variety of types of heaters - band heaters, strip heaters, immersion heaters, enclosure heaters and more. 

There is a particular kind of heater that is usually cylindrical, straight, and designed to go into a drilled hole. The heating element lies close to the sheath surface and come in diameters down to about 1/8 of an inch (3.175mm). 

Most in the industry call these products cartridge heaters. Others call them insertion heaters. They've also been called rod heaters. In some countries, including China and India, they are referred to as pencil heaters. 

But they are the same process heating device. 

In fact, if you do a Google search in the US for pencil or insertion heaters, the search engine returns "cartridge heaters" as a result almost every time (usually adding in "immersion heater" results for some reason.)

Located in the Netherlands, AeroNed B.V. will perform these services for BriskHeat’s ACR^® 3 Hot Bonders and ACR^®  MiniPRO Hot Bonders.

BriskHeat ACR^® hot bonders control the heat and vacuum for on-the-spot composite and metal bond repairs / cures.  These systems are portable and self-contained; allowing mobility for in the field repairs used in aircraft repair, wind turbine blade repair and a variety of industries like automotive and marine in applications such as recreational vehicles, racing, sporting goods and more.

The new ultra-flexible moisture and chemical-resistant heating tapes feature built-in thermostats preset for a wide variety of heating applications.

These heating tapes offer a much more flexible alternative to traditional heat trace cable to heat pipes, elbows, flanges, valves, instrumentation, and vessels for freeze protection, flow/viscosity control, condensation prevention, and process control. They can also be used as a flexible heat source for heated hoses. BriskHeat Announces Metal-Housed Heating Mantles for Round-Bottom Flasks for Use in Research and Development, Universities, Testing Labs and Chemical Industry Applications

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Aug. 25, 2017 – Today, BriskHeat, a leading provider of heating solutions, introduced a new line of metal-housed heating mantles. The mantles are for use in all laboratory settings including research and development labs that employ round-bottom flasks for heating liquids.

Bringing Extensive Aviation and Composite Industry Experience, Hampton Brown Joins BriskHeat to Fuel Growth in Those Sectors

Brown is also an accomplished certified pilot in both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft. He holds an FAA commercial instrument rating and graduated from the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, in Prescott, Arizona. His career in the U.S. Army included serving as a combat pilot, one of the first to deploy the AH-64 Apache in the European theater. He continues to make his home in Europe, currently residing in Salzburg, Austria.

When opened and laid flat, the Contractor’s Warming Case becomes an 18” x 28” (457mm x 711mm) warming pad that can be used to keep tools, temperature sensitive materials, and other items warm when working in cold environments.  

“Using our Fabroc™ heating element was a huge factor in the development of the Contractor’s Warming Case. The Fabroc™ heating element is extremely flexible and crush-proof which allowed us to design the [Contractor’s] Warming Case to be broken down into a flat surface heating pad.” Multon continued. “This is something our other container heaters were not designed to do.”

Unlike traditional heat trace products, the RKF tape has a tight bend radius of ¼”, allowing for easier installation and more surface contact, providing a more efficient, reliable, and uniform heater.
